With the increasing pressure from the United States on Iran, senior military commanders in Iran have called on Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei to pursue the acquisition of nuclear weapons. It is emphasized that Khamenei's fatwa prohibiting the development of nuclear weapons should be reconsidered.
With the implementation of the maximum pressure policy against Iran by U.S. President Donald Trump earlier this week, the necessity of acquiring nuclear weapons has begun to be advocated within Iran.
CALL FOR NUCLEAR WEAPONS TO KHAMENEI: WITHDRAW THE FATWA According to a report by The Telegraph, based in the UK, commanders of the Revolutionary Guards have called on Khamenei to possess nuclear weapons in response to "existential threats" from the West. Senior military commanders in Iran stated that for the continuation of the Tehran administration, Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei must "withdraw the fatwa prohibiting the development of nuclear weapons."
Ali Khamenei "WE HAVE NEVER BEEN THIS DEFENSELESS BEFORE" One of the officials stated, "We have never been this defenseless before, and this may be our last chance to obtain one before it's too late." Another Iranian official from Tehran remarked, "The Leader has prevented negotiations with the Americans and the development of nuclear weapons; this seems to be the only way to survive," and added:
"PRESSURES ARE GREATER THAN EVER" "We were only a few steps away from developing nuclear weapons, but the pressures and justifications for this are greater than ever. The existential threat we currently face has pushed many senior leaders, who previously insisted on following the Leader's guidance, towards the production of nuclear weapons." It was also noted that Khamenei's fatwa is still valid, but the rulings under Shia Islamic governance can change "according to time and circumstances." Accordingly, it was stated that the country "must conduct nuclear bomb tests because there is no other way."
Dozens of members of the Iranian parliament had called on the Supreme National Security Council to review its nuclear policy last year. Kemal Harazi, one of Khamenei's advisors, stated in a declaration made in November 2024 that the religious leader's fatwa is the only limit to the development of nuclear weapons. Harazi said, "If Iran faces an existential threat, we will have no choice but to change our military doctrine. We already have the technical capacity to produce weapons; the religious command prohibiting nuclear weapons prevents us from doing so."
A social media account affiliated with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards claimed last week that Iran has the technical capacity to produce nuclear weapons.
