U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would send troops to the city of Portland, Oregon, to protect it from the left-wing group Antifa and other "local terrorists."
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he would send troops to the city of Portland in the state of Oregon to "protect" it from the leftist group Antifa, which he previously labeled as an "internal terrorist organization," and "other local terrorist attacks," as well as the facilities of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
U.S. President Donald Trump made a statement regarding the deployment of troops to Portland on his Truth Social account, a U.S.-based social media platform.
SENDING TROOPS TO PORTLAND
Trump stated that he had instructed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the request of U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem, and ordered the provision of all necessary troops to protect "war-torn Portland and the besieged ICE facilities" from attacks by Antifa and other local terrorists. Trump also mentioned that he had granted "full authority to use force if necessary."
TRUMP'S MOVES TOWARDS DEMOCRAT-HEAVY CITIES
The Washington administration had deployed National Guard troops to Los Angeles in June and to Washington DC last month to control protests against immigration policies and to combat crime.
President Trump's decision to establish federal control over the Washington police department and to deploy National Guard troops to patrol the capital had been criticized as a "dangerous power grab."
Trump had also indicated that he would send troops to other cities run by Democrats, including Chicago, Baltimore, and Portland.
TRUMP ADMINISTRATION'S DESIGNATION OF ANTIFA AS AN INTERNAL TERRORIST ORGANIZATION
In the weeks prior, following the killing of Republican and far-right activist Charlie Kirk, the White House announced that it would accelerate targeting leftist groups.
The White House had issued a statement accusing Antifa of being behind 11 acts of violence in the past 8 years. Following this, Trump signed a presidential decree designating the leftist group Antifa as an "internal terrorist organization."
