Due to a drone sighting over Munich Airport in southern Germany, 32 flights were canceled, and 3,000 passengers were stranded at the airport. Following sightings at airports in Denmark and Norway, a drone alert occurred this time at one of Germany's largest airports. Eyewitnesses reported to the police that they saw a drone over Munich Airport at 9:30 PM local time on Thursday evening. The drone, which was initially undetectable, was spotted over the airport by police and airport officials an hour later. However, due to darkness, detailed information about the drone could not be obtained. As a result, all flights at Munich Airport were halted starting at 10:30 PM local time.
POLICE HELICOPTERS DEPLOYED AROUND THE AIRPORT
Fifteen flights arriving at Munich Airport were redirected to Stuttgart, Nuremberg, Vienna, and Frankfurt airports. With the cancellation of 17 flights departing from Munich Airport, approximately 3,000 passengers were stranded at the airport. While passengers spent the night at the airport, authorities provided those stranded with camp beds, food, and drinks. While officials have not yet identified who is behind the drone threat, police helicopters have been deployed around the airport. It was noted that flights at Munich Airport could resume during the day.
DRONE CRISIS IN EUROPE
Last week in Germany, an investigation was launched after drones were spotted over critical infrastructures, including a power plant in the city of Kiel in the state of Schleswig-Holstein. Additionally, last week, the Baltic countries were put on alert after drones were seen at airports in Denmark and Norway. Denmark had requested assistance from neighboring countries for the security of the European Union Heads of Government and State summit it hosted on October 1-2. -
