Ali Besili, who lives in Istanbul and came to his summer house in the village of Demiroluk in the Adaklı district of Bingöl with his wife Nebat 5 days ago, wanted to prepare tea on the stove in the kitchen to relieve their travel fatigue. However, he checked the valve of the gas cylinder and found that no gas was coming out.
THERE WAS A FLARE-UP AND A FIRE BROKE OUT
Besili wanted to check if there was a gas leak in the cylinder this time with a lighter. At that moment, due to gas accumulation, there was a flare-up and a fire broke out in the kitchen part of the house. Besili, who was seriously injured due to the fire and flare-up, made intense efforts to take the kitchen gas cylinder outside. After the fire in the house was extinguished with the help of neighbors, Besili was taken to Bingöl State Hospital, and after the intervention there, he was referred to the Burn Treatment Center of Erzurum City Hospital. Besili, who suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns on his face, head, right hand, and some parts of his body, is still receiving treatment. Ali Besili expressed that he was very upset about the unfortunate incident that happened to him.
"I TURNED ON THE STOVE BUT IT DIDN'T LIGHT"
Besili, who explained that they placed their belongings in the village house with his wife, continued: "My wife said, 'We just arrived, we are tired, let's make tea and have breakfast.' Then I put water in the teapot, I turned on the stove but it didn't light. I tried 3-4 times but it didn't work. Then I tried to open the cylinder, I shook it to check if it was full or empty, but it still didn't light. When I checked the valve of the cylinder, I could hear the gas sound, but the stove was not lighting. I wanted to check for a gas leak in the cylinder with a lighter, and when I lit the lighter, a loud noise was heard, there was a flare-up and a fire broke out."
"THE FLAMES ENVELOPED ME"
Besili later stated that a fire broke out in the kitchen and that he was able to place the cylinder from the kitchen cabinet onto the balcony after a long struggle. Expressing that the plastic balcony door caught fire quickly, Besili said, "When the door caught fire, all the flames enveloped me, then I dropped the cylinder and ran away. I wanted to save myself; I was afraid of the cylinder exploding. The neighbors extinguished the fire. At that moment, I didn't feel any pain."
"THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THE CYLINDER'S HEAD"
Besili, who stated that he could never forget the nightmarish event he experienced, noted: "The hospital services and our doctors are very good, may God bless them, they take great care of the patients. My treatment is going well. If I had known there was a gas leak, I wouldn't have done such a thing; there was a problem with the head of the cylinder. I wanted to hold the lighter away from the head of the cylinder to check it, and as I lit the lighter, there was a flare-up with a 'boom' sound."
Dr. Onur Ceylan from the Burn Treatment Center stated that Besili, who suffered 2nd and 3rd degree deep flame burns on various parts of his body, is continuing with medical and dressing treatments, and reminded that in case of suspected gas leaks, open flame sources such as lighters and matches should not be used.
