The trial regarding the murder of Narin Güran has reached its conclusion. Among the four defendants, mother Yüksel Güran, brother Enes Güran, and uncle Salim Güran received aggravated life sentences. The cooperating defendant, Nevzat Bahtiyar, was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison. On the day of the verdict, the defendants were also asked for their final statements.
The trial's final hearing regarding the murder of 8-year-old Narin Güran, closely followed by Turkey, took place with the detained defendants: mother Yüksel, brother Enes, and uncle Salim Güran, along with Nevzat Bahtiyar, who confessed to hiding Narin's lifeless body in the Eğertutmaz Stream. They were asked for their last words.
MOTHER YÜKSEL GÜRAN: I AM NOT MY DAUGHTER'S KILLER
Detained defendant Yüksel Güran stated that her heart is wounded, saying, "My Lord is my witness and my guarantor. I am not my daughter's killer. I did not harm my daughter in the presence of any servant of God. I hold my head high. I am currently answering alongside her killer. I want my acquittal."
ENES GÜRAN: I DO NOT ACCEPT THE CHARGES AGAINST ME
Detained defendant Enes Güran claimed that he always speaks the truth, stating that he does not accept the charges against him and requests his acquittal.
SALİM GÜRAN: THE OX IS IN THE SQUARE
Detained defendant Salim Güran, recalling that Narin is his niece, said, "She is my life; I am the last person who would harm her in this world. The ox is in the square. No one is saying the ox is here. I am innocent; I want my acquittal."
NEVZAT BAHTİYAR: I DEFINITELY DID NOT KILL HER
Detained defendant Nevzat Bahtiyar stated, "Mr. President, I definitely did not kill Narin. Salim Güran gave me the body. I carried it. Whatever the penalty for carrying is, I accept it. I swear I definitely did not kill her."
THE DECISION HAS BEEN MADE
The court panel decided to sentence the detained defendants mother Yüksel, brother Enes, and uncle Salim Güran to aggravated life imprisonment separately under the provisions of the Turkish Penal Code, articles 37/1, 82/1-d,e, 53/1, and 63 for the crime of "intentional murder of a child in participation."
Nevzat Bahtiyar was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for the crime of "destroying, concealing, or altering evidence."
The court panel, which decided to continue the detention of the defendants, did not apply any good behavior reductions in the sentences given to the 4 defendants.
WHAT HAPPENED?
Narin Güran, who went missing on August 21 in the Tavşantepe neighborhood of the central Bağlar district of Diyarbakır, was found dead in the Eğertutmaz Stream on September 8. In the investigation conducted by the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, 12 out of 23 suspects, including mother Yüksel, brother Enes, uncle Salim Güran, and neighbor Nevzat Bahtiyar, were arrested.
The investigation against Yüksel, Enes, and Salim Güran, along with Nevzat Bahtiyar, was completed, and an indictment prepared with a request for aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional murder of a child in participation" was accepted by the Diyarbakır 8th High Criminal Court on October 23. The trial of the defendants began on November 7, and the first hearing, which lasted 3 days, was postponed to December 26, with the decision to continue the detention of the defendants.
After the first hearing, the public prosecutor submitted a 14-page opinion to the court during the recess.
