Two fisherman brothers from the Vize district of Kırklareli set out to fish in the Black Sea and caught approximately 30 tons of anchovies in 6 hours with 2 separate boats. The anchovies loaded onto trucks were distributed all over Turkey. The brothers, who have been fishing in the region for 17 years, said, "The prices do not hold from day to day. A crate that sells for 4,000 lira one day drops to 400 lira the next day. When the fish population increases, prices hit rock bottom."
Mustafa Demir and his brother Murat Demir, who fish in the Kıyıköy town of the Vize district in Kırklareli, set out to the Black Sea with their boats at the first light of dawn to fish.
30 TONS CAUGHT IN 6 HOURS The fishermen returned to the Kıyıköy Fishermen's Shelter after catching approximately 30 tons of anchovies in about 6 hours in the sea where they cast their nets. The fishermen, who experienced the most fruitful day of the season, said that the anchovies brought smiles to their faces. The 30 tons of anchovies caught by the fishermen of Kıyıköy were loaded onto trucks and taken to various parts of Turkey.
"THERE HAS BEEN A SIGNIFICANT ABUNDANCE IN THE LAST 10 DAYS" Mustafa Demir, who has been fishing in Kıyıköy for 25 years, said, "The abundance came with the blessings of the month of Ramadan. But we are struggling economically. The fish is cheaper for us, but it is expensive at the market. Citizens are having difficulties because they cannot eat cheap fish. There is abundance right now; if we look at it on a box basis, we have one fish among a thousand boxes on average. That corresponds to 15 kilograms per box, which equals 15 tons of fish. This abundance happens every year, but there has been a significant abundance in the last 10 days. There wasn't this much abundance before that. Especially in the last 5 days, there has been a high density of anchovies," he said.
"AS THE ABUNDANCE OF FISH INCREASES, THE PRICE DROPS" Murat Demir, who has been fishing in the region for 17 years, said, "Right now, there is an abundance of anchovies, and it has become the favorite of this place in the winter season. There have been anchovies in this region for the last 16 years; before that, there were no anchovies here. This fish was expected in Georgia, but it exploded here. May it be blessed; there is abundance in the sea. This year can be considered a lean year for other fish. The abundance in the winter, along with the blessings of Ramadan, has activated the anchovies, so we have some hope. Prices are low; fish is like a stock market. Prices go up and down; they don't stay the same from day to day. As the abundance of fish increases, the price drops. Our catch used to be more yellowfin and bluefish, but they are not available this year. The prices do not stay the same from day to day. One box might go for 4,000 lira one day, and the next day it drops to 400 lira. When the population of fish increases, prices hit rock bottom," he said.
