In an armed attack in Katsina state, Nigeria, 19 people lost their lives, many others were injured, and dozens were kidnapped. Homes in the area were set on fire, and the local population's food supplies were also looted.
In the Gobirawa region of Katsina state in northwestern Nigeria, unidentified armed individuals launched an attack.
THEY KILLED 19 PEOPLE AND SET HOUSES ON FIRE
In the attack, 19 people lost their lives, many others were injured, and dozens were abducted. The armed individuals set fire to houses in the area while also looting food products from the local population. Meanwhile, Katsina State Police Spokesperson Abubakar Aliyu Sadiq stated that efforts have been initiated to rescue the abducted individuals.
KIDNAPPING FOR RANSOM IS COMMON IN THE COUNTRY
Nigeria has recently been facing attacks from armed gangs as well as Boko Haram and the West African branch of ISIS, ISWAP, in various regions of the country. Although the penalty for kidnapping in the country is death, incidents of kidnapping for ransom are frequently encountered. Armed individuals generally target villages, schools, and travelers in the northern part of the country to demand ransom.
