A striking detail emerged from the year-end data of the Turkish Statistical Institute. It was determined that the number of registered vehicles in Kars, a city with a central population of 100,000, has exceeded 50,000. The excess number of vehicles in the city has led to traffic problems on the streets, while the lack of parking spaces is also significantly complicating the daily lives of citizens.
According to the latest data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), although the central population of Kars is around 100 thousand, the number of registered vehicles has reached 54,138. This figure reveals that nearly one in every two people in the city owns a vehicle.
A MAJOR TRAFFIC PROBLEM IS EXPERIENCED
The increase in the number of vehicles is causing heavy traffic flow, especially on the streets and avenues in the city center. Experts point out that the vehicle ownership per capita is significantly above the national average, indicating that a traffic density similar to that of metropolitan cities has emerged in the city.
PARKING SHORTAGE ALSO HARMS CITIZENS
In addition to traffic, the parking shortage is also making daily life difficult for residents. Drivers face serious difficulties in finding parking spaces on busy streets, while unplanned parking practices negatively affect the flow of traffic throughout the day. Some citizens trying to reserve spaces by placing barriers and similar materials on the streets create additional chaos.
EXPECTATIONS FOR A SOLUTION ARE INCREASING
City residents are demanding new regulations to address the traffic and parking problems in response to the increasing number of vehicles. Drivers are expecting local authorities to take action, stating that permanent solutions need to be produced.
According to TÜİK data, the provinces with the highest number of vehicles are as follows;
- Kars 54,138
- Ağrı 36,501
- Iğdır 33,238
- Ardahan 22,033
