The trial of three defendants accused of the murder of 24-year-old Sedef Güler, whose lifeless body was found wrapped in a carpet in the sea with her hands and feet bound, continued. The detained defendant Yavuz Güngör stated in his defense at the court, "I did nothing, I must have lost my sanity at that moment. When I woke up, that woman was dead."
HER BODY WAS FOUND WRAPPED IN A CARPET IN THE SEA
On June 7, 2024, a woman's body was found in the sea off the coast of Büyükçekmece Mimar Sinan, wrapped in a carpet with her hands and feet bound and a weight attached. Investigations revealed that the deceased was Sedef Güler, and an indictment was prepared against three suspects related to the incident.
DEFENDANTS AND FAMILY PRESENT AT THE HEARING
The hearing held at the Bakırköy 4th High Criminal Court was attended by detained defendants Fırat Baykara and Yavuz Güngör, as well as the victim's mother Gülizar Sezer, her sister Sevda Güler, and the lawyers of the parties.
STRONG REACTION FROM MOTHER AND SISTER: WE DO NOT ACCEPT THE ACCUSATIONS
The complainant mother Gülizar Sezer stated in the hearing, "I do not accept any of the accusations made against me. I am complaining about all the defendants."
The complainant sister Sevda Güler said, "My sister and I did not use drugs."
DEFENDANT GÜNGÖR: SHE WAS DEAD WHEN I WOKE UP
Detained defendant Yavuz Güngör stated in his defense, "I did nothing. I may have lost my sanity at that moment. When I woke up, that woman was dead. I acted this way to avoid going back to prison. I did not want to harm the victim."
THE WEAKEST LINK
Detained defendant Fırat Baykara denied the accusations, saying, "I am the weakest link in this incident. They are playing a game on me. I did not establish any phone connection with anyone mentioned in the file. If Yavuz had told me someone was dead, I would never have entered that house."
TENSION IN THE HEARING: MOTHER AND DEFENDANT CLASHED
After Baykara's defense, mother Gülizar Sezer reacted by saying, "You cannot accuse my children." A dispute between the mother and the defendant led the court to recess.
INTERIM DECISION: CONTINUATION OF DETENTION
The court panel decided to continue the detention of the defendants and postponed the hearing to address the missing issues.
STRIKING DETAILS FROM THE INDICTMENT
The prepared indictment stated that Sedef Güler's hands were bound with packing tape, her feet were bound with chains and a dumbbell, and her body was wrapped in a carpet and thrown into the sea. It was noted that the label on the carpet belonged to a carpet cleaning factory, and research conducted from there revealed that the carpet came from the house rented by Fırat Baykara.
PLAN TO DESTROY THE BODY
According to the indictment, the defendants planned to destroy Sedef Güler's body after killing her for an undetermined reason. It was recorded that the defendants, who procured chains, weights, and a suitcase on June 6, threw the body into the sea from the Mimar Sinan Bridge.
ESCAPE ABROAD AND ARREST PROCESS
The indictment included that Yavuz Güngör was smuggled to Greece through Yiğit Hüseyin Ayvalık but was later returned to Turkey and arrested in Edirne.
CAUSE OF DEATH NOT CLARIFIED
The Forensic Medicine Institution report indicated that Sedef Güler had drugs in her blood, and the death could have occurred due to the effects of drugs or stimulants, but the exact cause could not be determined due to advanced decomposition.
REQUEST FOR AGGRAVATED LIFE IMPRISONMENT
The prosecution requested aggravated life imprisonment for Yavuz Güngör and Fırat Baykara for the crime of "qualified intentional murder," while seeking a prison sentence of 6 months to 5 years for Yiğit Hüseyin Ayvalık for the crime of "aiding a criminal."
