A 3-ton offering meal distributed after worship at a Hindu temple in the Indian state of Gujarat was literally looted. The thousands of kilograms of food were consumed in an instant. Images of people trampling over each other to reach the food became a hot topic on social media.

Approximately 3,000 kilograms of prasad (offering food) distributed at a Hindu temple in the Indian state of Gujarat was looted within minutes due to the large crowd. A brief panic occurred around the temple during the incident.

According to reports, prasad was distributed to worshippers after a religious ceremony held at the temple. As the distribution began, the crowd quickly grew, and the lack of control soon turned into a stampede. Despite the intervention of officials, nearly 3 tons of offering food was consumed in a very short time.

SECURITY MEASURES WERE INSUFFICIENT

It was reported that the crowd got out of control due to insufficient security and order around the temple. Eyewitnesses stated that some individuals attempted to carry the offering food in bags and containers.

ACTUALLY A FESTIVAL BUT...

This tradition, carried out as part of the Annaku? (Annakoot) Festival in India, involves a large amount of prasad offered at the temple being taken together by participants after the doors are opened.

However, there are also comments that this tradition, considered a celebration and offering sharing ritual, has become outdated.

In response to the images that emerged, some commented, "Calling a stampede a 'tradition dating back centuries' is nothing more than a convenient excuse to cover up mismanagement. We have left behind many medieval habits; the belief that food becomes 'sacred' after being trampled on or after fighting over a piece of food is a regression, not a ritual."
