In the Nilüfer district of Bursa, a senior woman who went for a morning walk reported a retaining wall and the connected walking path, saying "it's collapsing." Nine hours later, the wall collapsed onto the local mosque and the adjacent Quran course located in the same garden. The mosque, which suffered damage to its supporting columns, was closed for worship, while thanks to the elderly woman, a total of 31 students, including 16 children aged between four and six and 15 middle-aged women, were evacuated from the Quran course without injury.
An elderly woman who noticed a slip in the retaining wall built for the garden of Mevlana Mosque, located on Köşk Street in the Nilüfer district of Bursa, while on her morning walk, called the Nilüfer district mufti's office to report the situation.
ROAD CLOSED, 31 STUDENTS EVACUATED
Mufti office staff took action and informed Mevlana Mosque Association President Hamit Kara (69) and the female official of the Quran course. After the police, fire department, and municipal teams arrived at the scene and conducted their investigations, the road reported to have slipped was closed to traffic.
Meanwhile, half of the students, 16 children and 15 female staff members, were evacuated from the Mevlana Mosque Quran Course adjacent to the mosque. After the noon prayer, the mosque was closed for worship, and the Quran course was also suspended, with all necessary precautions taken.
9 HOURS LATER, BOTH THE ROAD AND WALL COLLAPSED
Nine hours after the elderly woman's report during her morning walk, the retaining wall and the walking path collapsed with a loud noise onto the mosque's backyard and the Quran course. There were no casualties in the destruction that occurred in the area where precautions had been taken and barriers were set up. Following the collapse of the wall and road, a large number of police, fire, and AFAD teams were dispatched to the area. After the investigation, it was reported that there were no living beings in the collapsed area.
"MAY ALLAH BE PLEASED WITH THAT SISTER"
Hamit Kara, the Mosque Association President, stated that thanks to the report made by the elderly woman who noticed the situation during her morning walk, they were able to evacuate the children and women from the Quran course, saying, "If our citizen had not made that notification, we would not have known when the wall would collapse, and therefore we would not have taken precautions. May Allah be pleased with that sister."
Kara explained that holes had formed in the wall of the Quran course where 31 students were being educated, and that three of the supporting columns in the mihrab section of the mosque had been damaged, stating, "There is a 9 hour and 45 minute gap between the report made and the collapse of the wall and road. We did not expect it to collapse so quickly. Thank God we have no injuries or casualties. We hope that the damage to the mosque and the Quran course will be repaired as soon as possible."
