Following the controversial presidential election won by the candidate of the Mozambique Liberation Front, Daniel Chapo, unrest continues in the streets. A riot broke out in a prison during protests in the capital, Maputo. 150 ESCAPED INMATES CAPTUREDPolice Chief Bernardino Rafael stated that the riot was triggered by anti-government protests outside the prison. Rafael reported that 1,534 inmates escaped, 33 people lost their lives in clashes with guards outside the prison, and 15 others were injured. He later mentioned that 150 inmates had been captured. INCREASE IN CRIME RATE EXPECTEDRafael, who mentioned that there were escape attempts in two other prisons, said, "We are concerned as Mozambicans and security forces. We expect an increase in the crime rate within the next 48 hours." It was learned that the inmates incapacitated the guards and seized AK-47 rifles, managing to escape from the prison. ELECTION RESULTS DISTURBED THE STREETSIn the presidential election held on October 9 in Mozambique, the ruling Daniel Chapo won. Chapo, who received 65% of the votes, came in first, while his rival Mondlane received 24% of the votes. Since the organization of the elections, Mondlane's supporters have been protesting the election results, claiming that there was fraud involved. In the violent incidents that occurred on Monday and Tuesday, 21 people lost their lives, and the death toll has risen to 151 since October 21.
