Shocking events occurred at St. Michael's Cathedral, one of the largest places of worship in Ukraine. The tension that began between members of the Russian and Ukrainian Orthodox Churches escalated into a violent conflict lasting six hours. The reason for the conflict was the attempt of Ukrainian Christians, who wanted to undermine the influence of the Russian Orthodox Church supporting Putin's invasion of Ukraine, to take control of the cathedral. Supporters of the Moscow Patriarchate tried to defend the church. According to eyewitnesses, both groups attacked each other with sticks and stones. Chairs flew through the air, fire extinguishers were used as weapons, and tear gas bombs were thrown. It was reported that during the fight, a bishop's hat was thrown off, and weapons were displayed but not used. The church's new military chaplain, Nazari Zasansky, stated, "There was complete chaos. The Moscow-aligned church has become an instrument of Russian intelligence and poses a danger to our country. For a long time, they have been trying to break the resistance of our people by saying 'Russia is not the enemy, we are all brothers.' This is pure propaganda." In the end, supporters of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church managed to seize the cathedral. Regional governor Igor Taburets stated that they were investigating the events but supported the cathedral's transfer to Ukrainian control, saying, "Ukraine's determination on the path to spiritual independence will continue."
