Protests erupted during a march organized to protest the Milano-Cortina Winter Olympics, which officially began yesterday in Italy.
MILAN IN TURMOIL BEFORE THE OLYMPICS
The games, which officially started with yesterday's opening ceremony in Milan, are also making headlines due to various protests. Following demonstrations held in Milan in previous days due to the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) teams, those arguing that the Olympics are unsustainable and those opposing ICE's operations in the city took to the streets once again.
During the march that started in the Porta Romana district of Milan in the afternoon and was attended by thousands, chants of "ICE out" were heard. Protesters, who argue that many public resources are wasted due to the Olympic games, protested the cutting down of numerous trees in Cortina due to the organization.
SECURITY FORCES INTERVENED HARSHLY
Until the evening, the peaceful march turned chaotic when a group wearing helmets and black hoodies attempted to leave the Corvetto neighborhood to reach the ring road, and security forces did not allow them. In response to protesters throwing numerous bottles, fireworks, and flares, the police used water cannons and tear gas.
Security forces intervened with batons against the protesters who were throwing fireworks. According to reports in the Italian press, 6 people were detained during the incidents.
