The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation following the sharing of the audio recording of the trial in which Ekrem İmamoğlu is being prosecuted, held in the courtroom of Marmara Prison in Silivri.
(ISTANBUL) The Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation regarding the sharing of an audio recording related to the Diploma Case hearing held today in the courtroom of Marmara Prison in Silivri.
IMAMOGLU IN COURT FOR "DIPLOMA" CASE
Following his arrest, Ekrem İmamoğlu, who was removed from his position as the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM), continues to be tried for the crime of "forgery of official documents" with a request for up to 8 years and 9 months in prison, based on the allegation that his university diploma is fake.
INVESTIGATION INTO THE SHARING OF AUDIO RECORDING FROM THE HEARING
The judge announced an interim decision, stating that the court has postponed the hearing to February 16, accepting the decision of the Administrative Court as a reason for delay.
During the hearing, the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office took action regarding the audio recording being taken and shared on social media. The Prosecutor's Office has initiated an investigation. The statement from the Prosecutor's Office regarding the matter is as follows: "On December 8, 2025, in the courtroom located within the Marmara Penitentiary Institution, the trial of the defendant Ekrem İmamoğlu for the crime of forgery of official documents in the case numbered 2025/381 of the Istanbul 59th Criminal Court of First Instance was continued; however, it was understood that an audio recording was unlawfully taken during the proceedings and shared on the social media platform named X: (regarding those who recorded and transmitted) an investigation has been initiated by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Organized Crimes Bureau under Article 286 of the Turkish Penal Code No. 5237."
