U.S. President Donald Trump signed a decision to impose a 10% global tariff on all countries. Some products will be exempt, and the implementation will begin on February 24.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he has signed a decision to impose a 10% global tariff on all countries.
IMMEDIATELY CAME INTO EFFECT
President Trump shared on his Truth Social account regarding the matter. In his post, Trump expressed, "I am greatly honored to have just signed a global 10% tariff on all countries," noting that these tariffs would come into effect almost immediately.
SOME PRODUCTS WILL BE EXEMPT FROM THIS TARIFF
It was stated in a White House announcement that Trump has signed a decision to implement a temporary import tax.
The announcement indicated that Trump is using the authority he has under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974, emphasizing that this section grants the president the authority to address certain fundamental international payment issues through additional taxes and other special import restrictions.
The announcement mentioned that a 10% import tax has been imposed on products imported into the U.S. for a period of 150 days, noting that the decision will come into effect from February 24.
It was stated in the announcement that some products will not be subject to the temporary import tax, with certain items such as critical minerals, energy products, some agricultural products, pharmaceuticals, specific electronics and automotive products, aerospace products, and informational materials being exempt from the tax.
The announcement also expressed that products covered under Section 232, as well as certain textile products from Canada and Mexico that comply with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, and some textile products from certain Central American countries are also excluded from the scope.
The White House announcement also noted that Trump has instructed the U.S. Trade Representative to investigate unreasonable and discriminatory trade practices against the country using his authority under Section 301.
THE SUPREME COURT HAD OVERTURNED TRUMP'S DECISIONS
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled yesterday that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA), under which the tariffs were implemented by Trump, does not grant the President the authority to impose tariffs.
In a press conference regarding the decision, Trump stated, "Foreign countries that have been robbing us for years are very happy, dancing in the streets. But you can be sure they won't be able to dance for long."
Trump expressed that there are even stronger methods he can use than the IEEPA tariffs, announcing that he would sign a decision to implement a global 10% tariff in addition to the tariffs currently in place under Section 122 of the Trade Act of 1974.
Trump also mentioned that they would initiate various investigations under Section 301 and other provisions to protect the U.S. from unfair trade practices by other countries and companies.
