The search has been initiated for Mahir Assad, the brother of Syria's ousted leader Bashar Assad. Known as the "executioner," Mahir is held responsible for the deaths of thousands of people.
Mahir, who commands the strongest units of the Syrian army, is the main responsible for the Ghouta chemical attack carried out in 2011. In this attack, 1,429 people lost their lives, including 426 children. United Nations inspectors confirmed that sarin gas was used in the attack.
According to the Syrian Network for Human Rights, security forces under Mahir's control have arrested or disappeared more than 157,000 people. Among those arrested are more than 5,000 children and over 10,000 women.
Former U.S. Ambassador to Syria Richard Murphy stated, "Mahir is described as tough, ruthless, or cruel depending on who you talk to. He is seen as the regime's 'executioner'."
Mahir also managed Syria's multi-billion dollar drug trade. The U.S. and the European Union have imposed sanctions on Mahir due to human rights violations.
Even his father has found Mahir to be "too unstable," and his whereabouts are unknown.
