WHAT HAPPENED?
Justin Trudeau, who has been in office since 2015, officially resigned today, dissolving his 37-member cabinet. Mark Carney was elected as the new leader of the Liberal Party by receiving 85.9% of the votes in the first round of the leadership election on March 9.
Carney served as the governor of the Bank of Canada from 2008 to 2013 and as the governor of the Bank of England from 2013 to 2020. Trudeau, who has been prime minister since November 2015, has recently faced increasing dissatisfaction within the party and low public support.
