Ghislaine Maxwell, Jeffrey Epstein's former girlfriend and accomplice, who is expected to testify before the House Oversight Committee, remained silent and did not say a word, exercising her right to remain silent. However, Maxwell's lawyer made a notable statement, indicating that if President Trump were to grant a pardon, their client would be willing to cooperate with Congress.
The case of billionaire Jeffrey Epstein, known for a network of sexual exploitation of underage girls in the U.S., has once again come to the forefront through his former girlfriend and accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell. In her testimony before the House of Representatives, Maxwell left questions unanswered while conveying a message to U.S. President Donald Trump that she could cooperate in exchange for her freedom.
THE SESSION LASTED MINUTES
The House Oversight Committee, one of the most authoritative oversight bodies in the U.S. Congress, summoned Maxwell to testify as part of the Epstein investigation. The 64-year-old Maxwell, who is held in a federal prison in Texas, participated in the session via video link. However, invoking her right to silence under the Fifth Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, Maxwell left all questions directed at her unanswered.
Despite months of preparation by the committee, the session lasted only minutes due to Maxwell's refusal to testify.
COMER: DISAPPOINTMENT ON BEHALF OF THE AMERICAN PEOPLE
James Comer, the chairman of the Oversight Committee, stated after the session that Maxwell's stance was expected but extremely disappointing. Comer noted that they had prepared numerous questions regarding the crimes committed with Epstein and potential accomplices, saying, "Our goal is to uncover the truth and deliver justice for the victims."
BARGAINING FOR COOPERATION IN EXCHANGE FOR PARDON
Maxwell's attorney made a striking statement, indicating that if President Trump were to grant a pardon, their client would be willing to cooperate with Congress. The statement also mentioned that Maxwell was open to testifying that Trump had not engaged in any illegal activities.
Comer reacted strongly to this call, stating that Maxwell deserved neither immunity nor a pardon.
HARSH WORDS FROM DEMOCRATS
The Democratic members of the committee also expressed their reactions after the session. Democratic Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury said that Maxwell was trying to "turn the congressional session into a bargaining for a pardon."
Democratic member Robert Garcia pointed out Maxwell's silence, asking, "Who is she protecting this way?" James Walkinshaw described Maxwell as "a monster. She played an active role in Epstein's crimes, threatened victims, and facilitated the abuse."
Jasmine Crockett stated that they would continue the fight to uncover all names connected to Epstein, saying, "Our work is not done yet."
20 YEARS IN PRISON
Maxwell, Epstein's former girlfriend and a British citizen, was sentenced to 20 years in prison in 2022 for aiding in the trafficking of minors for sexual exploitation. Denying the charges, Maxwell claims that she was declared a "scapegoat" after Epstein's death in prison in 2019.
