With the ease of surname changes through the e-Government system, applications have increased, and the most changed surnames are those that evoke negative connotations, such as "Top," "Koyun," "Satılmış," and "Çakal."
With the ability to change names and surnames through e-Government in Turkey, there has been a noticeable increase in applications. Data from the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs revealed that surnames that cause difficulties for individuals due to their meanings or are subjects of ridicule due to their pronunciations are being changed.
SURNAMES WITH NEGATIVE CONNOTATIONS STAND OUT
According to the data from the General Directorate of Population and Citizenship Affairs; surnames that have slang connotations, carry negative meanings, or can cause difficulties in daily life topped the list. With the widespread availability of digital application options, the process has become faster and more accessible. The increase in applications indicates that especially the young population and individuals who actively use social media are more sensitive regarding their surnames.
