The collapse of the 61-year Baath regime in Syria has resonated widely around the world. Syrians who had to flee their countries and are living as refugees in different countries celebrated with joy. Following these developments, the issue of the return of Syrians to their homeland, which has been debated in Turkey for a long time, has come back to the agenda. Inönü University Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Fikret Birdişli was a guest of presenter Abdurrahman Yazıcı on Haberler.com. Evaluating the effects of the regime change on Turkey, Birdişli stated, "We should not be too optimistic about the return of Syrians to their countries. Because there is an environment of uncertainty there. When Syrians first arrived, they were in the position of workers, but now they have become employers. No merchant wants to go to an environment of uncertainty. Those who see that the order and laws that exist in Turkey are not present in Syria will likely return (to Turkey)." Presenter Abdurrahman Yazıcı reminded his guest of the messages given by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and MHP Chairman Devlet Bahçeli just before the regime change in Syria and asked whether Turkey was aware of this operation in advance. Prof. Dr. Birdişli replied, "Turkey must have definitely advised the opposition regarding this changing environment because monitoring and evaluating the weakening of all these actors and the formation of a suitable environment on the ground requires serious state intelligence. It requires an intelligence organization."
