In Güngören, during a fight that broke out between two groups, including children, over 'side glances', 15-year-old E.Ç. stabbed 17-year-old Atlas Çağlayan. Çağlayan, who was taken to the hospital, could not be saved despite all interventions. Yener Başkutlu, a local shopkeeper, recounted the events that followed.
STABBED ATLAS WITH A SWITCHBLADE On January 14, around 20:20, a dispute arose between two groups who were reportedly unfamiliar with each other on Emek Street in Mehmet Nesih Özmen Neighborhood due to the claim of 'side glances'. The incident quickly escalated into a knife fight, during which E.Ç. (15) used a switchblade to stab Atlas Çağlayan in the chest area. Heavily injured, Atlas Çağlayan was taken to Bağcılar Training and Research Hospital by an ambulance called to the scene. Despite all interventions made here, Çağlayan could not be saved. The suspect E.Ç., who was caught by police teams after the incident, was taken into custody along with the knife.
"WE COULDN'T STOP THE BLEEDING" Yener Başkutlu, the owner of a nearby restaurant, stated, "When the incident started, the stabbing happened in an instant. We thought it was a leg injury. It turned out he was shot in the chest. Because he was shot in the chest, some of our friends here tried to intervene and apply pressure. Of course, since the wound was deep, we couldn't stop the bleeding. All our friends, his friends, tried to intervene. We called the ambulance several times. That day, we faced a significant problem with the ambulance. Because the ambulance came very late. Since no ambulance came from Güngören, one came from Bayrampaşa. Because of this, we waited for about 40-45 minutes for the ambulance. Since it was a judicial case, you can't intervene. You can't take the child to the hospital either. Therefore, it became a long process, but everyone here tried to intervene. We worked hard, but unfortunately, we couldn't save him. We tried to apply pressure. But unfortunately, we couldn't stop the bleeding very well. He was taken to surgery at the hospital and then passed away," he said.
"IT HAPPENED DUE TO A SIDE GLANCE ISSUE" Expressing his sadness over the incident, Başkutlu said, "Outside, the friends had apparently had a verbal argument before. Because of this, the friends came face to face. I was very saddened. A stabbing incident occurred for a reason of 'side glances'. An unnecessary death occurred due to a dispute among 14-15-year-old children," he said.
