Recently, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake recorded in the Serik district of Antalya drew attention to the region. Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy stated that the tremor in the Gulf of Antalya is not just a simple surface fracture, aligning with the views of Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, who often has differing opinions. Görür warned that the faults in the area have the capacity to produce much larger earthquakes.
According to AFAD data, a 4.9 magnitude earthquake recorded in the Serik district of Antalya caused panic in the city and drew the attention of experts to this region. Two important geoscientists made consecutive statements, providing similar assessments regarding the nature of the earthquake.
ÜŞÜMEZSOY: SEISMIC ACTIVITY IN THE ANTALYA GULF IS RELATED TO DEEP STRUCTURES
Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy emphasized that the tremor in Serik was not a simple surface fracture. He noted that there was no ordinary break in the analyses of the earthquake, stating that the activity was connected to deeper tectonic structures beneath the Antalya Gulf.
According to his analyses, the tremor occurred at the collision line of two large plates, specifically in the subduction zone where the Mediterranean plate dives beneath the Anatolian plate. He mentioned that the earthquake indicated a complex structure with a northwest-southeast orientation and a depth of approximately 100 kilometers.
Üşümezsoy pointed out that the seismicity around Antalya is connected to a broader Mediterranean tectonic system and emphasized that there are reverse fault structures in the region.
"EARTHQUAKES IN THE REGION DO NOT ORIGINATE FROM A SINGLE FAULT"
Üşümezsoy also recalled that last month, the line extending from the south of Cyprus to the west had ruptured, stating that this line formed a tectonic zone related to Crete and Rhodes.
The expert indicated that the seismicity around the Antalya Gulf is not the product of a single fault, stating, "The activity in the Antalya Gulf and its surroundings is a result of the complex interactions of the Mediterranean and Anatolian plates occurring deep underground."
NACİ GÖRÜR: THE EARTHQUAKE'S CAPACITY COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH GREATER
Geoscientist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür, in his warning following the tremors in Antalya, drew attention to the earthquake that occurred at a depth of 95 kilometers along the Torbalı-Aksu line. Görür stated that this earthquake occurred on normal faults, noting, "Since it was 5.2 in magnitude, it may not have affected the city much. However, considering the lengths of normal faults, the earthquake's capacity could have been much greater."
Görür's statement highlighted the potential for a larger earthquake to occur in the region.
