THE NUMBER OF HORSES, DONKEYS, AND MULES HAS DECREASED
According to the data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), there has been a decrease in the number of horses, donkeys, and mules in the livestock population over the past 20 years. The number of single-hoofed animals, which have historically been one of the important elements of livestock in Turkey, has rapidly decreased due to technological advancements in agriculture and transportation.
FROM 1 MILLION TO 600 THOUSAND
In Turkey, the number of horses, donkeys, and mules, which was 1 million 631 thousand 144 in 1991, decreased to 608 thousand 845 in 2006. Twenty years ago, there were 204 thousand 352 horses, 329 thousand 475 donkeys, and 75 thousand 18 mules in Turkey. By 2016, the number of horses had decreased to 120 thousand 40, the number of donkeys to 151 thousand 439, and the number of mules to 38 thousand 229. Last year, the number of horses was recorded as 65 thousand 339, the number of donkeys as 60 thousand 332, and the number of mules as 12 thousand 398. Since 2006, the number of horses has decreased by 68%, the number of donkeys by 81%, and the number of mules by 83%. Last year, the number of camels was recorded as 1055, and the number of pigs as 1388.
In Turkey, the number of livestock, which was 43 million 232 thousand 86 in 2006, increased to 75 million 583 thousand 303 last year. According to the data, the number of cattle was 17 million 544 thousand 200, the number of buffaloes was 164 thousand 785, the number of sheep was 46 million 688 thousand 813, and the number of goats was 11 million 185 thousand 505. Among poultry, the number of turkeys was recorded as 3 million 192 thousand, the number of ducks as 389 thousand, and the number of geese as 1 million 264 thousand.
