SUCH A THING HAS NEVER BEEN SEEN IN TURKEY'S HISTORY

Associate Professor Dr. Bülent Özmen, a faculty member of Gazi University’s Faculty of Engineering and a disaster management expert, made striking statements regarding the intense seismic activity in the Sındırgı district of Balıkesir. He noted that nearly 18,000 tremors have been recorded in the region in the three months following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 10, with two of them being 6.1 and about 80 of them being over 4. He stated, "We are facing an unprecedented level of earthquake activity, which we refer to as an 'earthquake storm,' that has never been seen in Turkey's history."

"EXTRAORDINARY MEASURES MUST BE TAKEN"

Reminding that AFAD recently declared the region a "General Life-Affecting Disaster Area," Özmen indicated that if this is not deemed sufficient, applications such as "disaster-affected area" or "state of emergency" should be considered. He said, "The residents of Sındırgı have been living with constant earthquakes for three months. This is an extraordinary process, and extraordinary measures must be taken," emphasizing the need to expand temporary shelter areas, facilitate the relocation of those who wish to move to other regions, and ensure that education and health services are provided without interruption through special arrangements.
