The Ministry of Treasury and Finance issued a statement regarding the new special consumption tax (ÖTV) regulation on passenger cars. The statement said, "This step has been taken primarily to contribute to the reduction of the current account deficit."

The "Law on the Protection of the Value of Turkish Currency and Amendments to Some Laws and the Decree Law No. 635," which includes provisions for the regulation of SCT rates in the automotive sector, along with the related Presidential Decision, has been published in the Official Gazette and has come into effect.

With the decision, the SCT system for motor vehicles has been reshaped, with the SCT rates for domestic passenger cars reduced by 5 and 10 points, while the SCT rates for imported luxury passenger cars have been increased by 10 and 20 points. The thresholds for electric vehicles have also been raised, and the SCT rates have been increased by 15 points.

"IT HAS BEEN TAKEN TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE REDUCTION OF THE CURRENT ACCOUNT DEFICIT"

A statement regarding the new SCT regulation has also come from the Ministry of Treasury and Finance.

The statement from the Ministry included the following remarks:

"With the new regulation made in the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) application for passenger cars within the framework of the powers granted by Law No. 7555, changes have been made in the SCT base and rates, taking into account engine displacement, electric range, and battery capacity. This step has essentially been taken to contribute to the reduction of the current account deficit.

THE REGULATIONS MADE WERE ENUMERATED ONE BY ONE

In this context;

  • The SCT rates have been reduced by 5 to 10 points for some vehicle groups where sales are intense,
  • The existing rates have been maintained for some models,
  • For other models, the SCT rates have been increased by 10 to 20 points.

Due to the fact that the changes made include both reduction and increase effects, it is anticipated that the net inflation effect of the regulation on an annual basis will only be 0.0019 points."
