A 20-year-old national weightlifter in Konya spoke about the incident where he allegedly bullied his 14-year-old sister at school due to her weight and physically assaulted her. The male student said, "I was attacked by a man I didn't know for reasons I don't understand. I am not a bully." His sister stated, "We were beaten by people we saw for the first time. My mental health is in a bad state."
On February 3rd, Tuesday, terrifying moments were experienced at Adnan Hadiye Sürmegöz Middle School located on Güvence Street in the Feritpaşa neighborhood of the central Selçuklu district of Konya. According to allegations, I.K. (14), a student at the school, told his family that his peer E.İ. mocked him because of his weight. I.K.'s mother and brother S.B.K. (20) went to meet with the school administration. While S.B.K. was having a meeting with the school principal in his office, S.B.K. encountered E.İ. in the corridor. S.B.K. attacked E.İ. with punches and kicks.
HE ASSAULTED THE STUDENTS BULLYING HIS SIBLING Noticing the situation, the supervising teacher intervened and tried to separate them. At that moment, E.İ.'s sister A.İ. came and reacted. S.B.K. then attacked E.İ.'s sister A.İ. with a punch as well. With the teachers intervening, the parties were separated. The incident was also recorded by security cameras. S.B.K. was detained by police teams called to the school upon notification. It was learned that S.B.K. won the European Championship in weightlifting at the age of 17, and he was released after giving his statement.
"I HAVE A WEIGHT PROBLEM TOO" E.İ., who was assaulted along with his sister, described his experience as follows:
"He came in the corridor and said, 'How can you mock my brother?' I replied, 'Brother, I don't know your sister.' Then he lunged at me. He said, 'I will kill you. No one can mock my brother' and started hitting me. I am very victimized. I am very sad that I was beaten by a stranger for a reason I do not know. As far as I learned, I was beaten because I was a bully, but I am definitely not a bullying person. I do not know the other party. On the day of the incident, I got to know his sister and brother. Even if bullying is involved, he should have reached out to my family or gone to the administration. But that man came and directly beat me, and I was assaulted due to a baseless claim. I am not a bullying person. Moreover, I have a weight problem too. I am not a person who would bully someone because of their weight. I was studying for my LGS exam. My educational life has been ruined. I haven't been able to go to school for days. I don't know what will happen now. Justice will not be blind, I am sure of that."
"WE DO NOT DO TO OTHERS WHAT WE DO NOT WANT DONE TO OURSELVES" A.İ. stated, "Both my brother and I were beaten by a man we did not know, in front of everyone. We were beaten by people I saw for the first time in my life. My brother has been struggling with weight problems for years. We were subjected to peer bullying. We would never do to anyone what we do not want done to ourselves. When I saw him, he was beating my brother, and when I tried to intervene, he hit me too and started making death threats. I am an LGS student this year. So I cannot go to school. My psychology is in a bad state," she said.
"THEY CANNOT GO TO SCHOOL AFTER THE INCIDENT" The mother A.İ. expressed that she did not understand why her children were subjected to violence, saying, "There is absolutely no peer bullying as alleged. My children only became aware of the existence of the mentioned female student at that school on that day. We got to know these people after that assault incident. We have no enmity. We do not know them. We do not know their children either. I still do not know why my children were subjected to this violence. My children were beaten. These children were 8th-grade students. We had preparations for the LGS. After the incident, we have not been able to go to school in any way. On one side, there is a person who resorts to violence, storms the school, and assaults the first small child, using his identity as an athlete as a threat, applying disproportionate force. On the other side, there is us, who are fighting a legal battle against all odds. My son also has weight problems. We have been struggling with this for years. Can an overweight person bully someone else? What kind of mental block is this? I still do not know why we are experiencing this," she said.
