A bill that increases penalties for homosexual relations has been presented to the National Assembly in Senegal. With the new bill, the prison sentence for those committing acts defined as "against nature" in the current regulation is raised to 10 years. The bill also proposes up to 7 years of imprisonment for individuals who "promote" homosexuality.
In Senegal, Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko announced during a question-and-answer session held in the National Assembly that a bill proposing amendments to Article 319 of the Penal Code has been submitted to the National Assembly.
UP TO 10 YEARS OF IMPRISONMENT
Sonko also stated that the homosexual relationship, currently defined as "an act against nature" in the existing regulation, will be more clearly defined in the law. He noted that the law, which currently foresees a prison sentence of 1 to 5 years, will be aggravated, and the penalty for those committing the act will be increased to up to 10 years.
PENALTY FOR PROPAGANDIZERS AS WELL
The bill also proposes that individuals who "propagandize" homosexuality will face imprisonment of 3 to 7 years. However, no date has yet been announced regarding when the bill will be voted on in the National Assembly.
