The ongoing peace talks between the United States and Ukraine in Geneva have turned into a severe crisis. During a meeting where the peace plan was discussed, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov broke his pen out of tension. Meanwhile, President Trump increased pressure on Ukraine to accept the plan, which has been described as a "wish list" from Russia.
The peace talks held in Geneva between the delegations of Ukraine and the USA are continuing in a much harsher atmosphere than expected. The 28-point peace plan presented by US President Donald Trump has heightened Ukraine's security and sovereignty concerns, straining the course of the meetings.
BROKE HIS PEN DURING THE DISCUSSION The Ukrainian delegation made it clear from the very beginning of the talks that the tension would be high. Notably, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov broke his pen at a critical moment when security issues were being discussed. Diplomatic sources indicate that this action reflects the intense pressure felt by Ukraine.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov. KIEV ADMINISTRATION IS UNCOMFORTABLE Trump's peace plan has created significant discomfort within the Kiev administration. According to the plan, Ukraine will have to cede some of the territories it defended despite losing 1.5 million soldiers during the war to Russia. Additionally, it is expected to halve the strength of its army and remove many missile systems provided by the West from its inventory.
ECONOMIC ITEMS ARE DRAWING REACTIONS The economic items of the plan are drawing reactions as much as its security aspect. The fund to be established for the reconstruction of Ukraine being under US control under the name "US–Ukraine Fund" opens the way for Washington to establish the industries it desires in the country. Another striking point added to the plan is that NATO countries, including Turkey, will be able to send troops to Ukraine in the event of a new war.
US President Trump also carried the tension from the negotiations to his social media account. He accused Ukrainian leaders of "not appreciating" him. In response, some Ukrainian sources speaking to European leaders and the US press described the draft prepared by Trump as a "wish list taken from Russia." These statements sparked anger within the Trump administration.
"IMPROVED FRAMEWORK" REMAINS UNCLEAR After yesterday's meeting, the parties issued a joint statement announcing that "an improved framework for a peace plan has been established." However, it was not disclosed which items the new framework encompasses. The negotiations are expected to continue in the same harsh atmosphere in the coming days.
