Manisa Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ferdi Zeyrek was severely injured after being electrocuted while trying to check a malfunction in the pool at his home on the night of June 6, 2025, the first day of Eid al-Adha, and passed away on June 9 at Manisa Celal Bayar University Hafsa Sultan Hospital. As part of the investigation into his death, 10 people, including 2 who are in custody, will appear before the court on December 5.
STATEMENTS OF ZEYREK'S WIFE AND DAUGHTER REVEALED
The indictment accepted by the Manisa 5th Heavy Penal Court revealed the statements of his wife Nurcan Zeyrek and daughter Nehir Zeyrek. Nurcan Zeyrek stated that she heard her husband talking with their daughter about the pool water being murky and that her husband said, "I will take care of it." She added, "I heard my husband talking to Nehir about why the water was murky. My husband told Nehir, 'I will take care of it.' Nehir went to her room. My husband also told me, 'The motor is probably not working.'
Nurcan Zeyrek mentioned that while she was going upstairs to put their twin daughters to sleep, she heard a painful sound from outside and thought her husband Ferdi Zeyrek might have fallen when she saw that the door leading to the pool's motor section was open. She quickly went downstairs to the energy room and found her husband Ferdi Zeyrek lying motionless. When he did not respond, she went back upstairs to call an ambulance.
"I FELT THE ELECTRIC CURRENT"
In her statement, Nurcan Zeyrek said: "I went to my husband. When I touched the iron of the stairs, I felt the electric current. At that moment, I was wearing slippers. My husband's foot was stuck on the stairs. I also heard a slight crackling sound. I ran back into the house and turned off all the switches. Then I returned to my husband and touched the metal stairs again to be sure. This time there was no electric current."
"WE HAD BEEN EXPERIENCING ELECTRICAL MALFUNCTIONS SINCE WE MOVED IN"
Nurcan Zeyrek stated that they first checked her husband Ferdi Zeyrek's pulse, and then fire and ambulance teams arrived at the scene. She reported that the teams performed CPR and provided oxygen support to her husband, and after his pulse returned, he was taken to the hospital by ambulance. Nurcan Zeyrek mentioned that they had frequently experienced electrical malfunctions since moving into the house, that the switches had tripped, and that many electricians had come to the house in the past, adding that neighbors had similar problems. She demanded that those responsible or negligent in her husband's death be identified and punished.
"WHY IS THIS POOL SO MURKY?" HE ASKED
Deceased Ferdi Zeyrek's daughter Nehir Zeyrek used the following words in her statements in the indictment: "My dad was in our garden, and when he saw this person, he said, 'Brother, can you take a look?' Then when the man approached, my dad started talking to him. My dad asked, 'Why is this pool still like this, why is the water murky?' In response, the man whose name I do not know said, 'I just spoke with Mr. Yalçın, the maintenance has been done. I cleaned the pool, added chlorine, and did all the necessary maintenance.' When my dad got a bit angry, he said, 'If you want, I can check it again, but the water will clear up in a few hours.' My dad replied, 'Okay, brother, if you say so, then let's wait.'
Nehir Zeyrek stated that on the day of the incident, they were sitting in the garden as a family, and her father complained about the murkiness of the pool. She went to her room to watch a movie and heard a scream around 11:31 PM. When her mother shouted, "Your father has fallen," she went downstairs and reported the situation to 112. Nehir Zeyrek explained that they realized it was an electric shock, immediately turned off the switches in the house, and that the medical teams who arrived later performed CPR on her father.
