The Nobel Prizes in physics, medicine, chemistry, economics, and literature for the year 2025 were awarded at a ceremony held at the famous Concert Hall (Konsert Huset) in Stockholm. Climate protest before the ceremony
About 100 climate activists gathered in front of the Concert Hall where the ceremony took place, protesting against some companies that finance the Nobel ceremonies, claiming they harm nature and forests. The activists chanted slogans like "Stop polluting our world."
The Venezuelan opposition politician Maria Corina Machado, who won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, could not attend the ceremony, so her daughter Ana Corina Sosa accepted the award at the ceremony in Oslo.
Machado's selection for the award drew criticism due to her defense of Israel, which has supported the ongoing attacks in Gaza for over two years. As a result, the Norwegian Peace Council did not hold the traditional "torch march" for Machado this year.
The Council emphasized in a statement that Machado did not align with their values.
Protests against Israel and the US during the Nobel dinner
A protest demonstration was also held in front of the Stockholm City Hall during the traditional Nobel dinner following the Nobel ceremony. Demonstrators protested against Israel's ongoing attacks on Gaza for over two years and allegations of US military preparations against Venezuela.
The crowd chanted "Stop the genocide in Gaza" and "Don't touch Venezuela" in both Swedish and English. At the same time, there was a reaction against the European Union for supporting these countries.
Demonstrators carrying Palestinian flags also protested the awarding of the Peace Prize to Machado. In a statement made on behalf of the group, the following was said about Machado:
"A woman who dedicated her award to Donald Trump, welcomed the American military intervention in Venezuela, and was congratulated by Netanyahu."
The statement also emphasized that Israel did not comply with the peace agreement signed on October 10, that attacks continued in Gaza and the West Bank, and that the occupation persisted.
