The opposition groups in Syria seized the capital, Damascus, within 12 days through a lightning operation, overthrowing President Bashar al-Assad. Assad, who fled the country with his family, sought refuge in Russia. The combination of 13 years of civil war and external factors prepared the surprising end of the ousted leader. REACTION TO ASSAD: SOLD HIS FAMILY AND COUNTRYWhile developments in the region are closely monitored, the stance of the ousted leader Bashar al-Assad's family was also a matter of curiosity. The first statement on this issue came from Manal Assad, the wife of Bashar Assad's younger brother, Mahir Assad. Manal shared the new Syrian flag on social media, stating, "Long live free and proud Syria, despite the family and country traitors." FORCED TO CLOSE HIS ACCOUNTThe post was interpreted as Assad leaving the country without informing his brother. Hundreds of comments reacting to the post were made. Some comments included phrases like "Where was your mind until now?" and "You are also complicit in the crimes." Manal soon closed her account, which included posts supporting the regime. HER HUSBAND IS KNOWN AS "THE HEAD BANDIT"Mahir Assad is someone who is referred to as "the head bandit" by Syrian opposition. He has a bad reputation due to his bloody and ruthless personality. Manal Assad was born in 1970 in Damascus. She is also on the UN and EU sanctions list. HER FATHER WAS IN ASSAD'S TEAMHer father, Tevfik Cadaan, was part of Hafiz Assad's team. Despite his Sunni identity, he was part of Hafiz Assad's ruling cadre from 1971 onwards. After opposing Assad on some issues, he parted ways and left Syria. He first went to Saudi Arabia and then to London. During this process, his daughter Manal met Mahir Assad. Despite their past opposition, the Cadaan family reconciled with the Assad family and returned to Syria. Manal and Mahir Assad got married in 2003. They have two daughters.
