Istanbul University made a statement regarding the investigation initiated for the crime of forgery in official documents, following the claim that the diploma of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu is fake. The statement noted that the letters from the Higher Education Council and the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office have reached the university.
İstanbul University reported that the investigation letter from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the claim that the university diploma of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu is fake, as well as the letters from the Council of Higher Education (YÖK), have reached the university within the scope of the investigation opened for the crime of "forgery in official documents."
In a statement from the university, it was stated, "The investigation letter numbered 2025/44681 dated February 24, 2025, from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and the letter titled 'Investigation File' dated February 27, 2025, from the Council of Higher Education have reached our university. In this context, necessary examinations and procedures will be established within our university based on the letter from the Council of Higher Education, the letter from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and the findings in the 'Research Report' dated February 17, 2025, from the Presidency of the Higher Education Supervisory Board, and the results will be communicated to the relevant institutions and the public."
WHAT HAPPENED?
The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had launched an investigation for the crime of "forgery in official documents" based on reports of the fake diploma of IBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and findings in the report prepared by the Council of Higher Education regarding the falsity of his diploma.
İmamoğlu had been invited to the prosecutor's office to give a statement as part of the investigation.
The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, in a letter sent to Istanbul University regarding the investigation opened against İmamoğlu for the claim that his university diploma is fake, requested that the necessary procedures be carried out as soon as possible to ensure that the actions and transactions to be established based on İmamoğlu's diploma are not contrary to the law.
