The former state of 23-year-old Barış Özbay, who is a phone and computer addict talked about in Turkey, has emerged.
50-year-old Semra Özbay and her 23-year-old son Barış Özbay, who lost their homes in the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş and continue to live in the Defne district, have held on to life together after the earthquake. The family, who lost both their homes and loved ones in the earthquake, has been struggling with a difficult process for 3 years.
LOST THE WILL TO LIVE AFTER THE EARTHQUAKE Barış Özbay, who lost the will to live after the earthquake and dropped out of the university he was attending to constantly play with his computer and mobile phone, was also found to be playing with his phone on the night of February 6, when the disaster of the century occurred.
"I WAS CAUGHT PLAYING WITH MY PHONE DURING THE EARTHQUAKE" Barış Özbay stated that he was playing with his phone when the earthquake struck at 04:17 on February 6, the day of the disaster of the century, and that he continued to play with his phone even at that moment. "I wasn't sleeping during the earthquake and I sat and played with my phone until the evening. We started to shake during the earthquake, at first, I thought it was a small earthquake, but it accelerated. When the electricity went out, I realized something serious was happening, but I continued to play with my phone. I was recording my game during the earthquake. My grandmother initially didn't believe there was an earthquake and thought I was shaking. While I was still shaking, I continued to play with my phone. The earthquake stopped, and I got my family out of the house," he said.
"IF I COULD, I WOULDN'T EAT OR GO TO THE TOILET" Özbay, who stated that he rarely goes out of the house and plays with his phone all day, said, "When I don't go out, I look at my two friends' houses, and if their houses are not available, I don't go out. During those times, I was still playing with my phone. When I come home, I play with my phone again. I don't really know the names of the videos I watch on my phone. If you ask about music genres, God knows. I could have stayed at home and taken a shower, but I didn't want to do anything. I only eat and go to the toilet. I do those because I have to. It's hard for me to take a shower because of my psoriasis, but it has nothing to do with my psoriasis. Even if I didn't have psoriasis, I wouldn't take a shower. If I could, I wouldn't eat or go to the toilet. I wish I could sleep all day," he said.
"HE WAS ALWAYS WELL-GROOMED BEFORE THE EARTHQUAKE" Furkan Çakmak, a friend of Barış, who stated that he has changed a lot after the earthquake, said, "I am Barış's middle school friend; we grew up together. He wasn't good at school, but he was smart about everything. He mostly played computer and phone games. He learned a bit of English by watching movies with English subtitles. His joy and excitement for life had diminished. He seemed to have problems that he couldn't solve with himself beyond his psychological issues. That's why we never left him alone and did our best to be by his side as friends. After we dispersed after university, he was left alone. As he became more isolated, he shut himself in the house even more. He was always well-groomed before the earthquake and took showers like normal ordinary people and loved to take showers. When we went to university, his perspective on life changed a lot. He doesn't want to take showers like before. After the earthquake, he completely shut himself off. He closed himself off from life because he thought he wouldn't have a chance. He hasn't cut his nails or taken care of himself for about 3 years. We want to return to the good old days," he said.
"I DON'T WANT ANYTHING ELSE, JUST MY SON TO RECOVER" Mother Semra Özbay stated that her son used to hang out with his friends before the earthquake but has locked himself in the house and plays with his phone after the earthquake, saying, "Before the earthquake, my son used to hang out with his friends. They would go to parks and snack on something. I didn't notice my son's condition before the earthquake, but I noticed it after the earthquake. I noticed it before the earthquake, but I thought it was temporary. I don't know what he does on the phone all the time, but he usually watches videos or listens to music. He never used to let his nails grow before the earthquake and took care of himself. He completely changed after the earthquake. He doesn't take showers either. I just want my son to recover; I don't want anything else," she said.
