Elif D., who killed her newborn baby by stabbing it in the throat and chest in Beşiktaş, and then attempted to throw it in the trash and burn it, stated in court that she had undergone brain surgery 10 years ago and therefore did not remember anything. The court ruled for a report from the Forensic Medicine Institute regarding the mother's mental health status, as it was determined that she went shopping at a market after killing her baby.

The trial of the defendant Elif D, who stabbed various parts of her body to get rid of the baby she gave birth to on August 31, 2025, in Beşiktaş, and then attempted to burn it by the trash container, has begun. The hearing at the Istanbul Heavy Penal Court was attended by the detained defendant Elif D. and her lawyer.

"I HAD BRAIN SURGERY 10 YEARS AGO, I DON'T REMEMBER ANYTHING"

In her defense during the hearing, the defendant Elif D. claimed that she could not have committed the acts in question, stating, "I had brain surgery 10 years ago. Therefore, I don't remember anything."

The defendant's lawyer requested her release.

A REPORT ON MENTAL HEALTH WILL BE PREPARED

The court, announcing its interim decision, ruled that the detention of the defendant Elif D. would continue. The panel ordered a report to be obtained from the Forensic Medicine Institution regarding the defendant's mental health status and decided to forcibly bring the father of the deceased baby to give his statement as a 'complainant', and adjourned the hearing.

FROM THE INDICTMENT

The indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that the suspect Elif D. had separated from her religiously married husband, missed the legal time to terminate her pregnancy, and concealed her pregnancy from her family.

The indictment stated that upon the onset of labor at home, the suspect went to the adjacent boiler room, gave birth alone, cut the cord with scissors found in the boiler room, and carried out her actions in a planned manner by hiding the baby from her family from the very beginning. After the birth, she injured the baby's throat with scissors by creating a deep cut in the neck to get rid of the baby, and caused the baby's death by stabbing it in the chest with a sharp cutting tool. It was recorded that the suspect then placed the baby, along with her underwear and pajamas from the birth, into a trash bin and attempted to burn it.

SHE KILLED HER BABY AND WENT SHOPPING AT THE MARKET

The indictment also included the statement of the suspect Elif D., in which she said, "My parents did not know I was pregnant. Only my sister knew. I cut the cord in the boiler room, then left the baby there without breastfeeding or doing anything. I don't remember if I inflicted the injuries on it. I don't remember any of the processes after the birth. When I got home, I didn't hear any crying from the baby. I washed and cleaned the boiler room. While washing it, I put the baby in a bag; I don't remember exactly, but I probably harmed the baby. Later, I took the baby to the side of the trash container. I don't remember if I burned the baby, but after I returned from the market, I saw the trash collectors trying to extinguish the trash bin I left. I regret it," she stated.

AGGRAVATED LIFE IMPRISONMENT SOUGHT

The indictment requested that the suspect Elif D. be sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of 'deliberate killing with monstrous feelings, against a descendant and a person who cannot defend themselves.'
