It was reported that 8 young people who were detained during the protests against the arrest of Ekrem İmamoğlu in Istanbul appeared before a judge on charges of "insulting the president" and "illegal meeting and demonstration." The court decided to release only the 24-year-old young man who was studying at Sabancı University and whose lawyer stated, "My client's father is the CEO of one of the companies that produces national frigates for our country. He has a photo with the President. On that day, one hundred thousand people went there, but one hundred thousand people are not here; I wish he hadn't gone." The other 7 young people were arrested.
"HE ATTENDED OUR PRESIDENT'S DINNER"
It was revealed that a similar situation occurred in another case. 19 young people who were detained appeared before the 1st Peace Criminal Court on March 25 on charges of "illegal meeting and demonstration." A detention order was issued for 17 young people, while only 2 young people were granted release. The 18-year-old student stated that he did not go to Saraçhane for protest purposes and did not flee from the police, requesting his release. The student's lawyer used the following statements in his defense:
"My client did not wear a mask. He is outside, not involved in the action, and has not participated in any incident. He is a university student and attended our esteemed President's dinner a week ago. He went only to watch and did not participate in any incident. He has a fixed residence, there is no suspicion of fleeing, and evidence has been collected. There is no suspicion of tampering with evidence. For all these reasons, we request that my client be released to be tried without detention; if the court disagrees, we request the application of judicial control measures."
ONLY 2 YOUNG PEOPLE WERE RELEASED UNDER JUDICIAL CONTROL
The lawyers of the other young person whose release was decided also presented the assault reports to the court. The court's decision included the following statements:
"They have been referred to our court for their arrest on the grounds of committing the crime attributed to them. However, considering the defendants' defense and the scope of the file, it has been concluded that the measure of detention would not be proportional at this stage and that the benefits to be obtained from detention could also be achieved through judicial control measures. Therefore, the request for detention by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office is rejected, and it is decided to release the defendant immediately if he is not detained or convicted of another crime, and additionally, the defendant is placed under judicial control in accordance with Articles 109-110 of the Criminal Procedure Code."
