The Gendarmerie Criminal Investigation Teams solved two murders of women committed in Istanbul in 2016 by using bone fragments and cigarette butts found in Bolu-Mengen. The identities of the victims were determined through the obtained DNA samples, and the perpetrators were arrested.

Gendarmerie Crime Investigation Teams (JASAT) announced that two separate murders of women committed in Istanbul in 2016 were clarified based on bone fragments and cigarette butts found in Bolu-Mengen.

In a written statement made by the Gendarmerie General Command regarding the matter, the following was stated: "As a result of the studies conducted by JASAT teams under the coordination of the Gendarmerie General Command's Public Order Department, the Criminal Department, and the Bolu Provincial Gendarmerie Command's Public Order Branch Directorate; a DNA examination was conducted by the Gendarmerie Criminal Department on the skull and bone fragments found buried in Yumrutaş village of Mengen district of Bolu province on July 24, 2024."

IDENTITIES IDENTIFIED

Through Interpol, the Bolu Provincial Gendarmerie Command reached the families, and the identities were definitively identified by comparing DNA samples taken from the victims and their relatives living in Istanbul.

As a result of the studies; the samples taken from the victims matched with the cigarette butt evidence obtained from another murder case committed in Istanbul in 2016. As a result of detailed investigations and coordination established with the Istanbul Police Department, it was determined that the bones belonged to two foreign women named M.M. and M.Y., who had been missing since 2016.

In the investigation deepened by examining the HTS records of the victims' mobile phones by JASAT and the Mengen District Gendarmerie Command teams; it was revealed that the victims were killed by individuals named F.Y. and Y.D. and buried in a wooded area in Mengen. It was determined that the perpetrators were still imprisoned due to another 'intentional murder' crime they committed in 2016. Two suspects, whose statements were taken on February 25, 2026, were arrested once again for 'premeditated intentional murder' and placed in a Closed Penal Institution.
