The municipal council convened an extraordinary meeting to select a successor for Şehzadeler Mayor Gülşah Durbay, who passed away in the hospital while receiving treatment for colon cancer. The voting resulted in a tie in the first round. In the second round, Hakan Şimşek was elected as the new mayor.
The Mayor of Şehzadeler, Gülşah Durbay, who passed away at the age of 37 on December 14 while receiving treatment for colon cancer, has been succeeded by a new mayor determined by the municipal council.
The Şehzadeler Municipal Council convened on Friday, December 19 at 16:30 in the Manisa Cultural Center Council Meeting Hall. In the extraordinary meeting, the new mayor to serve in place of the late Mayor Gülşah Durbay will be determined by the votes of the council members.
SECOND CANDIDATE EMERGED
Şehzadeler Municipal Council Member Hakan Şimşek was nominated as a candidate. Council member Yenal Yıldırım reacted to the decision by announcing his own candidacy. Yıldırım had resigned in April after criticizing Durbay while serving as deputy mayor. The AKP and MHP announced that they would not nominate a candidate.
NEW MAYOR ELECTED IN THE SECOND ROUND
In the first round, Şimşek and Yıldırım each received 7 votes. 4 votes were deemed invalid. In the second round, the CHP's candidate Hakan Şimşek received 23 votes, while Yenal Yıldırım received 7 votes. Thus, Hakan Şimşek became the new Mayor of Şehzadeler.
