The United Public Workers' Confederation's press statement, intended to protest the inflation data released by TÜİK, was not permitted by the police in front of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. While union members were surrounded in the vicinity of the Assembly, there were occasional interventions during the demonstration.
The United Public Workers' Confederation went on strike with approximately 200,000 workers across the country, arguing that the inflation data announced by TÜİK does not reflect the realities of the national economy. The confederation announced that a press statement would be made today at 14:00 in front of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
NO PERMISSION FOR ACTION
Union members affiliated with the United Public Workers' Confederation wanted to gather in front of the TBMM Dikmen Gate. However, police teams announced that the press statement was prohibited and did not allow the action. The union members who wanted to make a statement were surrounded by police.
UNION MEMBERS SURROUNDED
Police teams surrounded some of the union members at the General Staff Junction and others in front of the Assembly. During the tension, it was observed that police teams occasionally intervened with the union members.
"WHAT IS THE GOVERNOR AFRAID OF?"
Orhan Yıldırım, the General President of the United Public Workers' Union, stated in a related announcement, "What happened that the Governor is afraid of the voices of unions, confederations, and non-governmental organizations being heard here while the budget discussions are ongoing in the assembly? Can an Ankara Governor be afraid of this? They are afraid of a half-hour press statement we will make here. Why are you afraid? We will tell the truth to the public. The budget is clear. The governorship says, 'I gave an order.' We say the governor may have given an order. The order can be changed back. We are trying to meet with the governor. It is probably said that the governorship does not want to meet in the meeting. We do not accept the governorship imposing a ban here despotically and outside the laws."
