In the presidential election held in Honduras on November 30, Nasry Asfura, supported by U.S. President Donald Trump, won with 40.26% of the votes.
It has been reported that the presidential election held on November 30 in Honduras, a Central American country, was won by the conservative candidate Nasry Asfura of Palestinian descent, supported by U.S. President Donald Trump. According to the National Electoral Council's (CNE) announcement, Asfura, the conservative candidate of the National Party, known by the nickname "Papi a la orden" (At your service), achieved victory by obtaining 40.26% of the votes. The Liberal Party candidate Salvador Nasralla came in second with 39.54% of the votes. The candidate of the ruling Liberty and Refoundation Party (Libre), Rixi Moncada, finished third with 19.19% of the votes.
LIBERAL PARTY LEADER ANNOUNCED THEY WILL NOT RECOGNIZE THE RESULTS
According to a report by Reuters, Liberal Party candidate Nasralla rejected Asfura's victory, citing that votes were counted incorrectly, and announced that he would not recognize the election results. The winner of the elections held on November 30 in the country was announced late due to the narrow margin of votes between the candidates and the objections from the parties, which prolonged the vote counting process. CNE President Ana Paola Hall confirmed that technical issues occurred during the election process and stated that the final results could be delayed.
WHO IS ASFURA?
Asfura, a businessman of Palestinian descent, was born on June 8, 1958, in the capital city of Tegucigalpa. Having served as mayor of Tegucigalpa for two terms, Asfura implemented numerous steel and concrete infrastructure projects aimed at improving vehicle traffic during this time. During his presidential campaign, Asfura emphasized financial stability, job creation, and strengthening productive infrastructure. Additionally, he promised to support the agriculture and livestock sectors, improve connectivity infrastructure, and implement projects that would have an immediate impact on the local economy.
HE RECEIVED TRUMP'S SUPPORT
Nasry Asfura was in the spotlight in 2020 due to allegations of money laundering, fraud, misuse of public resources, and abuse of power. Asfura, who denied these allegations, also claimed that he had no connection to the Pandora Papers, an international corruption scandal involving politicians, public officials, and businessmen. U.S. President Trump, who called on Honduran voters to support Asfura, promised to provide "a lot of support" to Honduras if the National Party candidate won.
