Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the spread of the Iran war to the Caspian Sea would be viewed as "extremely negative" by Russia. Peskov's statement came after Israel recently announced for the first time that it had struck Iranian military targets in the Caspian Sea.
Russia issued a striking warning against the potential expansion of the war between the US-Israel and Iran. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that the conflict spilling over into the Caspian Sea would be viewed by Moscow as "extremely negative."
THE MESSAGE CAME AFTER THE IRAN ATTACK
Peskov's statement came after Israel recently announced that it had struck Iranian military targets in the Caspian Sea for the first time. This development raised concerns that the war could geographically expand, highlighting Russia's sensitivity in the region.
CRITICAL REGION FOR RUSSIA
The Caspian Sea is vital for Russia not only because of its energy resources but also due to its strategic military position. The region is under the joint control of Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan and is considered a security area closed to external intervention. Therefore, the transfer of the conflict to this area is seen as a crisis that could directly affect Russia, moving beyond just the Iran-Israel tension.
“STATEMENTS ARE CONTRADICTORY” MESSAGE
Peskov also made noteworthy remarks regarding the negotiation process between the US and Iran. He stated that the Kremlin finds the statements from Washington and Tehran "contradictory," emphasizing that the diplomatic process is unclear. Recently, US President Donald Trump claimed that contacts with Iran are ongoing, while Iranian officials deny these claims. This situation creates uncertainty about whether a potential negotiation process is genuinely progressing.
RUSSIA IS PURSUING A BALANCE POLICY
Since the beginning of the war, Moscow has provided political support to Iran while avoiding direct military intervention. The Kremlin had previously announced that "this is not our war," indicating that it would not engage directly in the conflict. According to experts, Russia is trying to maintain its strategic relations with Iran while preventing the war from spreading into its sphere of influence. The warning regarding the Caspian Sea is considered one of the clearest indicators of this balance policy.
US-ISRAEL ATTACKS ON IRAN
While negotiations between the Tehran and Washington administrations continue, Israel and the US launched a military attack on Iran on February 28. Iran responded with attacks on targets it identified in several regional countries, including Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain, where US bases are located, in addition to Israel.
In the US-Israel attacks, numerous high-ranking officials, including Iranian leader Ali Khamenei, were killed. According to Iranian officials, the death toll from the US-Israel attacks exceeded 1,443, while the number of injured surpassed 17,000.
