A former anesthetist, Frederic Pechier, who was tried for poisoning 30 of his patients in the city of Besançon, France, resulting in the deaths of 12, has been sentenced to life in prison. Pechier is accused of mixing substances into the medications of his patients, whose ages ranged from 4 to 89, that caused their hearts to suddenly stop.
The Doubs Criminal Court in the city of Besançon, located in eastern France, has announced its decision regarding Frederic Pechier, a former anesthesiologist accused of poisoning 30 of his patients, leading to the deaths of 12 of them.
SENTENCED TO LIFE IMPRISONMENT
The court sentenced the specialist, found guilty in all 30 cases, to life imprisonment. According to reports in the national press, an investigation into former anesthesiologist Pechier was first launched in 2017 on suspicion of poisoning patients.
ADMINISTERED DRUGS THAT STOPPED PATIENTS' HEARTS
Former anesthesiologist Pechier was accused of poisoning 30 patients, aged between 4 and 89, at two different clinics where he worked from 2008 to 2017, leading to the deaths of 12 of them.
It was alleged that Pechier mixed medical fluids into the patients' medications that would cause their hearts to suddenly stop.
The former anesthesiologist can appeal the court's decision within 10 days.
