A couple from İzmir went viral on social media with a video of them singing "Ne Bilsin Eller," a song by Coşkun from Ankara, during their wedding. Following this, the owner of the song filed a lawsuit against the couple, demanding 300,000 TL for a settlement. The couple, stating that they did not gain any financial profit from the video, called on the artist to withdraw the lawsuit and to sing the song together.
Hasan Başkaya, a conservatory graduate living in Izmir, and Öznur Başkaya, a civil servant who sings amateurly, got married in June 2023. The music-loving Başkaya couple immortalized their special day by singing the song "Ne Bilsin Eller" by Ankaralı Coşkun at their wedding, receiving great applause from the guests. The video of their performance was shared on social media, especially on wedding pages, and Ankaralı Coşkun, the owner of the song, congratulated the couple by commenting on one of the videos.
ANKARALI COŞKUN FILED A LAWSUIT AGAINST THE COUPLE After the footage gained significant attention, the Başkaya couple faced an unexpected situation. It was revealed that Coşkun Direk, known as Ankaralı Coşkun, filed a complaint against the couple after the video went viral and demanded 300,000 lira for a settlement.
"I GOT 500 LIKES ON MY ACCOUNT, BUT IT REACHED MILLIONS ON DIFFERENT ACCOUNTS" The Başkaya couple, who got married in June 2023, stated that they quickly became a topic of discussion due to the numerous shares of the song they performed together at their wedding entrance on social media. Music teacher Hasan Başkaya noted that the footage was shared not from their accounts but by various wedding pages, saying, "My wife sang it amateurishly. Her singing in her wedding dress attracted a lot of attention. I got 1,500 likes on my account, but different accounts reached millions." After the video spread on other platforms, the couple wanted to contact Ankaralı Coşkun to obtain permission to officially sing the song; however, they did not receive a positive response.
FIRST HE CONGRATULATED, THEN DELETED HIS COMMENT AFTER FILING A LAWSUIT Hasan Başkaya stated that in the early days after the video was shared, Ankaralı Coşkun congratulated him by leaving a clapping emoji on his account and even responded to his comment saying, "Forgive me, brother, we sang without permission."
Başkaya later described the process: "After a while, he said that an investigation would be opened and deleted his comment. We expressed that we did not gain any financial profit from the video and gave our statement. The mediator informed us that he wanted 300,000 lira from us. We were very surprised by this amount. I have never seen such money in my life."
Ankaralı Coşkun THEY WANT TO SING THE SONG TOGETHER AND SHOOT A MUSIC VIDEO Stating that the work has now been banned for them by Ankaralı Coşkun, Başkaya argued that copyright laws have significant gaps in this regard. "Even singing without permission can be a subject of a lawsuit without any financial gain. It can happen even if you post a story. This is a serious issue that concerns all musicians," he said.
Hasan Başkaya expressed that they still love Ankaralı Coşkun very much and even offered to sing the song together and shoot a music video despite the entire process. Başkaya stated, "We listen to him with love. We want him to withdraw the lawsuit; we have no other requests."
