A critical development occurred before Syrian President Ahmed Shara's meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Monday, November 10.
DISCUSSIONS ON LIFTING SANCTIONS
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) discussed a resolution proposing the lifting of sanctions against Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara and Syrian Interior Minister Enes Hattab.
DECISION ADOPTED
The U.S. resolution put to a vote by UNSC members was adopted. In the vote attended by 14 members, all participating countries expressed their support for lifting the sanctions. There are 15 countries in the United Nations Security Council, including 5 permanent members.
FOREIGN MINISTRY HAD SUPPORTED
In the meeting between Trump and Shara, bilateral and regional issues are expected to be addressed, primarily the lifting of U.S. sanctions on Syria. The U.S. Department of State announced last week that they support the lifting of the Caesar Act, which includes sanctions against Syria, by Congress.
CAESAR ACT ON THE AGENDA
One of the spokespersons from the U.S. Department of State had made a written statement regarding the Caesar Act. The spokesperson noted that they expect the legal arrangement for lifting the Caesar Act, which includes sanctions against Syria, to be added to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for 2026, which is still on Congress's agenda.
The U.S. spokesperson stated in their announcement, "The administration supports the lifting of the Caesar Act. Congress should include this lifting in the NDAA."
