In the last month, the continuous rainfall in Bursa and the melting of snow have caused Lake Ulaabat to overflow into the Karacabey Plain. Despite being prohibited, the bungalows built in the area known as the lake basin were left stranded in the middle of the lake as the water rose. The scene was reminiscent of Hollywood movies.
In the Akçalar neighborhood of the Nilüfer district in Bursa, days have passed since the flooding caused by the overflow of Lake Uluabat, yet the waters have not receded. In the neighborhood where the lake basin has expanded to reach residential areas, dozens of tiny houses, hobby houses, and bungalows have been submerged, while citizens are trying to adapt to the newly formed conditions.
STRUGGLE FOR LIFE IN WATER
After the heavy rainfall, the lake level rose by approximately 10 meters, causing the lake waters to overflow into the neighborhood. Many access roads were closed to traffic, and farmers' cultivated lands were also submerged.
After the flood, the area has almost turned into an extension of the lake, while some citizens are trying to save their homes and belongings, and others continue their daily lives intertwined with water by adapting to the new scenery. It was observed that some citizens' ducks were swimming in the flooded areas, while rescue operations continue around the damaged bungalows and tiny houses. Most of the holiday structures along the lake are completely surrounded by water, and it has been learned that boats can reach points where access by vehicle is not possible. While the local people wait for the water to recede, they are trying to sustain their lives with temporary solutions.
IT DID NOT FALL SHORT OF HOLLYWOOD HOUSES
The scale of the flood was also captured by a drone. The images revealed that nature has almost drawn a new boundary in the region. The extent of the submerged areas once again demonstrated how large an area Lake Uluabat covers. With the arrival of the lake waters, the houses left in the middle of the water resembled those in the famous Hollywood film The Lake House.
"ANIMALS, CHICKENS, ALL HAVE BEEN SUBMERGED"
Tekin Berkdemir, the owner of a tiny house who described the scale of the disaster they experienced, said, "It hasn't been like this for 10 years. Two years ago, some water came, it reached the other door, but it wasn't much. This year, unexpectedly, it flooded everywhere. Animals, chickens, all have been submerged, many of my animals died. I could only bring my dogs here. The villagers' situation is evident. I come every day to check, and if water has reached the place where the animals are, I move them forward."
