Earthquake expert Professor Dr. Okan Tüysüz, recalling the major earthquakes that have occurred in the Marmara region in the past, stated that the likelihood of an earthquake exceeding 7 in the future is high. Tüysüz emphasized that the earthquakes in the region have been historically recorded and that scientific studies have confirmed this expectation.

Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz stated that significant earthquakes have occurred in Marmara in the past and that it is inevitable for them to happen in the future, saying, "There is a possibility of an earthquake, especially one that could exceed 7."

Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz drew attention to the fact that Turkey is a country located in an earthquake zone during the conference titled "Earthquake Potential of Turkey and Edirne," held at the Edirne Municipality Atatürk Cultural Center.

"WE CAN SAY FOR SURE THAT IT WILL HAPPEN IN THE FUTURE"

Tüysüz explained that earthquakes in Marmara are recorded in historical documents from the Ottoman, Byzantine, and Roman periods, stating, "Has it happened in the past? Yes. Will it happen in the future? We can say for sure that it will happen in the future."

Tüysüz noted that when examining the earthquakes felt in Istanbul, 49 earthquakes were recorded during the Byzantine period and 52 during the Ottoman period, and that these caused varying degrees of damage.

"THERE IS A POSSIBILITY OF AN EARTHQUAKE THAT COULD EXCEED 7"

Tüysüz expressed that scientific studies confirm this expectation, saying, "There is a possibility of an earthquake that could exceed 7. Although some friends say, 'There will be no earthquake,' unfortunately, there is no scientific study that could support this view."

Emphasizing that the distribution of these earthquakes is particularly concentrated in the Ganos segment of the North Anatolian Fault, Tüysüz stated that there is a serious expectation of an earthquake in Marmara today.

"THE POSSIBLE LARGEST EARTHQUAKE COULD BE 7.2-7.3"

Tüysüz highlighted that a new earthquake will occur in the region where the 1509 and 1766 earthquakes took place, stating, "The possible largest earthquake could be 7.2-7.3 in magnitude. Smaller earthquakes may also occur, but the possibility of an earthquake of magnitude 7 always remains."

Tüysüz noted that precautions against earthquakes need to be increased, stating that 24 provinces, 101 districts, and 550 villages in Turkey are located on the main fault line. Tüysüz informed that the southern parts of Edirne would also be affected in a possible Marmara earthquake.

Edirne Mayor Filiz Gencan also explained the measures they have taken against possible earthquakes in the city.
