The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has initiated an ex officio investigation against Özel for his statements directed at Public Prosecutor Cahit Cihad Sarı, on charges of "publicly insulting a public official due to their duty" and "threatening."
STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE
The statement made by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office included the following: "An ex officio investigation has been initiated against CHP Chairman Özgür Özel due to his statements directed at Public Prosecutor Cahit Cihad Sarı, who is assigned to the Organized Crime Investigation Office of our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, during a press statement he made on 16/07/2025 in Silivri. The charges include publicly insulting a public official due to their duty and threatening. Additionally, an investigation has been initiated regarding the social media posts targeting our Public Prosecutor following the aforementioned statements."
THIRD INVESTIGATION AGAINST ÖZEL WITHIN A MONTH
Previously, on July 5, an ex officio investigation was initiated by the Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against Özel for the statements he made during the press conference following his party's MYK meeting, on charges of "insulting the President," "publicly inciting to commit a crime," "insulting public officials due to their duties," and "threatening."
On July 11, the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office announced that an ex officio investigation had been initiated against Özel due to the statements he made regarding the operation against Manavgat Municipality during his party's rally in Antalya, on the charge of "publicly disseminating misleading information."
