A mother and father living in Oklahoma are facing first-degree murder and animal cruelty charges after their malnourished pit bull attacked and fatally injured their 2-year-old daughter. If found guilty, the parents could face life imprisonment.

A horrific neglect in Oklahoma cost the life of a 2-year-old girl. The young child, left in the same room as the family's pit bull, lost her life after a fatal attack. The parents are facing charges of first-degree murder and animal cruelty.

LEFT ALONE WITH THE PITBULL

According to a statement from the Oklahoma District Attorney's Office, 24-year-old Darci Lambert and 34-year-old Jorden McGuire's 2-year-old daughter, Locklynn Rose McGuire, died on November 18 after being attacked by their dog at their home in Oklahoma City. When police arrived at the house following a report of a "non-breathing child," they found Locklynn with serious injuries related to the animal attack.

PREVIOUS ATTACKS

Authorities stated that the young girl had previously been attacked by the same dog and sustained serious but non-fatal injuries. At that time, the other three dogs in the house were also found to be malnourished.

SEVERE NEGLIGENCE CHARGES

Oklahoma City Police Chief Dillon Quirk stated in an interview with PEOPLE magazine that the child had been left alone with the dangerous animal for an extended period before her death. The district attorney's office explained that the parents intentionally failed to protect their child and allowed the situation despite being fully aware of the risks.

FIRST-DEGREE MURDER CHARGES

The couple, initially charged with second-degree murder, saw their charges elevated to first-degree murder and two counts of animal cruelty as the investigation progressed. They are being held in jail on a $1 million bond.

Authorities also noted that the death penalty can be applied in certain first-degree murder cases in the state of Oklahoma.
