Four people who went hiking on Mount Vardousia in the Fokida region of Greece lost their lives after being caught in an avalanche during their ascent of Korakas Peak. The incident has plunged the local community and the climbing community into mourning.
Four people, including one woman, who went hiking on Mount Vardousia in the Fokida region of Greece, went missing due to bad weather conditions. The group was climbing to the Korakas Summit at an altitude of 2,495 meters when their relatives reported them missing after a while.
A COMPREHENSIVE SEARCH-AND-RESCUE OPERATION WAS INITIATED
Following the report, more than 30 firefighters and a special rescue team began search efforts in the area. Specially trained dogs and drones were also used in the operation.
BODIES FOUND UNDER THE AVALANCHE
During the search efforts, after footprints were detected, the bodies of the four individuals were found under an avalanche. Fire department officials noted that two members of the group were experienced climbers, while emphasizing that the mountainous terrain became extremely dangerous under bad weather conditions.
