Prof. Dr. Gürol Seyitoğlu, a faculty member of the Department of Geological Engineering at Ankara University, drew attention to the more than 500 earthquakes that have occurred in the Aegean Sea in the past week during an interview with presenter Melis Yaşar on Haberler.com. Explaining the reason behind the earthquake storm, Seyitoğlu issued critical warnings regarding tsunamis and the city of Izmir.

The earthquake storm that has been ongoing around Greece's Santorini Island for the past week has caused panic. Over 500 earthquakes have been recorded in the region, with the largest reaching magnitudes of 5.2 and 4.9. Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis has called on the public to remain calm, while thousands are leaving the islands. This earthquake storm, which has caused panic, is also being closely monitored from Turkey.
Prof. Dr. Gürol Seyitoğlu, a faculty member of the Department of Geological Engineering at Ankara University, evaluated the more than 500 earthquakes that occurred in the Aegean Sea on Haberler.com. Seyitoğlu explained the reason for the earthquake storm and made important warnings regarding tsunamis and Izmir.
"THE AEGEAN REGION IS ONE OF THE FASTEST EXPANDING AREAS ON EARTH"
Prof. Dr. Gürol Seyitoğlu stated that the Aegean Region is one of the fastest expanding areas in the world, noting that this expansion movement frequently causes earthquakes. He expressed that the recent increase in seismic activity is also a result of this expansion.
"NO DATA HAS BEEN OBTAINED YET RELATED TO VOLCANIC EARTHQUAKES"
Seyitoğlu stated that they do not have definitive data on whether the earthquakes in the Aegean are of volcanic origin. He noted that the findings obtained so far do not show any signs of volcanic activity.
"ALL SEISMIC MOVEMENTS INDICATE A EARTHQUAKE STORM RESULTING FROM NORMAL FAULTING"
Speaking about the source of the earthquake activity, Seyitoğlu said that the current seismic data indicates that the events are a result of a earthquake storm caused by normal faulting.
"IF A TSUNAMI OCCURS, TURKISH COASTS WILL BE AFFECTED"
Seyitoğlu emphasized that the risk of a tsunami should not be overlooked in the event of a major earthquake in the Aegean, stating, "If a major earthquake occurs and fractures happen on the seabed, the Turkish coasts will also be affected by this tsunami."
"THE SHIFT OF EARTHQUAKES TO THE NORTH WILL DIRECTLY AFFECT IZMIR"
Seyitoğlu mentioned that currently, seismic activity is concentrated in the Aegean Sea, but if these movements shift northward, Izmir could be directly affected. He stated that residents in the region should be cautious and that authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
